Thai vs Balinese Massage: The Real Difference (and Which to Book in Chandigarh)
Both come from Southeast Asia, both use acupressure — but they feel completely different. Here is how to choose between Thai and Balinese massage.
People often ask us at the front desk whether Thai and Balinese massage are "the same thing". They are not. Both come from Southeast Asia and both use acupressure, but one leaves you feeling stretched and light, the other leaves you sleepy and warm.
Thai massage in one line
Clothed, no oil, lots of stretching. You lie on a padded mat in loose clothes while the therapist uses palms, thumbs and gentle body weight, then guides you through assisted stretches. At our Sector 26 spa it is ₹1,999 for 60 minutes. Read more on our Thai massage page.
Balinese massage in one line
Aromatic oil, long strokes, acupressure, one continuous rhythm. It is done on a massage table, with warm aromatic oil, at medium pressure. It is ₹2,199 for 60 minutes. Read more on our Balinese massage page.
Side by side
- Oil: Thai — none. Balinese — aromatic oil.
- Clothing: Thai — fully clothed. Balinese — you undress to your comfort level and stay covered by a sheet.
- Feels like: Thai — active, like assisted yoga. Balinese — slow and flowing.
- After the session: Thai — light, mobile, alert. Balinese — calm, warm, sleepy.
- Best for: Thai — stiffness, tight hips and hamstrings. Balinese — stress and deep relaxation.
Which one should you book?
Choose Thai if you sit at a desk all day, feel inflexible, go to the gym, or simply prefer not to have oil on your skin — for example if you are going back to the office.
Choose Balinese if you want to switch off completely, have a free evening, and enjoy the scent of aromatic oils.
Still torn? Book the couples room with a friend — one Thai, one Balinese — and compare notes afterwards.
A practical tip
For Thai massage, wear or bring loose, comfortable clothes (track pants and a T-shirt are perfect). For Balinese, nothing special is needed; we provide fresh linen for every guest.
Both are available every day at Buddha International Spa & Lounge, SCO-43, 1st Floor, Sector 26, Chandigarh, near Pizza Hut. See all prices on the therapies page.
